TV Troubleshooting Tips

Poor digital TV signal. No signal inscription on the TV screen. The guy is upset about the TV breaking down.

Not all of us are lucky enough to be tech-savvy. In fact, with technology constantly changing and updating, most of us get a little bit lost when it comes to having to fix the picture or sound on our TVs. Thankfully, here at Electronic World, we know our stuff. We’re clued up on anything and everything about cheap TVs so no need to worry, we’ve got your back.

Have you ever heard the dreaded scream of “The TV looks all funny” or “The sound’s gone” from your kids in the front room whilst you pretend not to hear in the kitchen? We understand that heart-sinking feeling and know it can be stressful going through every menu option on the remote to try and fix it. Luckily for you, we’re providing you with everything you need to know in order to get those colours popping and the speakers bringing music to your ears once more.

I’m having trouble connecting my TV to the internet

Internet issues are arguably one of the most frustrating TV problems and with a million different factors to consider, it can be stressful trying to figure out what the problem is. Our first recommendation would be to check for any error messages. These often appear on the screen with a code.

Once you have the code, you can check it against the manual, whether that be the hard copy that comes as standard with all our graded TVs, or online where most TV manuals can be found. If that doesn’t help to answer any questions, then the next step is to refresh your internet connection.

You can usually find this in your ‘Network Settings’ within the settings on your TV. Most of the time, by completing either one, or both of these steps, the problem will be solved. However, if you are still having trouble connecting, it may be an issue with your broadband. Unfortunately, your TV settings can’t help with that – it’s best to take a look at your router and try to figure out what’s going on.

My TV picture doesn’t look right

Getting the most out of your cheap OLED TV is essential. Most people choose this type of TV for the picture it provides, which is why it’s important to keep these tips in mind in order to appreciate the outstanding quality they can provide.

The display is too dark

If you’re finding that the picture is too dark on your screen, especially during the day, it may be due to the automatic brightness adjustment settings on your TV. Whilst these are great most of the time, sometimes you may need to change the settings yourself in order to get the most optimised display. You can find this within the ‘Brightness’ or ‘Backlight’ settings on your TV.

The colours don’t pop

Similarly to the last problem, this could be due to some automatically adjusting settings on your TV. You can play around with the picture settings to get the most optimised display depending on what and when you’re watching. We recommend taking a look at the ‘Contrast’, as well as the ‘Colour Temperature’. There will also be some ready-made picture settings, so test some of those and see which works best for you. To really make the most of your cheap LED Smart TV and see the colours pop, try ‘Dynamic’ or ‘Vivid’ picture modes.

The picture is stretched, squashed, or doesn’t fit the screen

Are you finding that your screen looks a little off? If it’s stretched, squashed, or hanging off the edges of the TV then you’re not getting the most out of your TV and this needs to change. The picture size settings can be called a number of different things depending on the brand of TV that you have. Look out for ‘Picture Size Settings’, ‘Zoom’, ‘Aspect Ratio’, or ‘Wide’ and see which setting works best for your TV. Remember: if you’re using your TV for gaming, or have an HDMI cable linked up, the picture size settings will more than likely need adjusting so this is a great tip to keep in mind.

The sound on my TV isn’t working

If you’re not getting any sound at all from your TV then there are a few quick checks you can do:

Make sure your TV isn’t on mute. It may sound simple, but someone could have accidentally pressed the mute button without realising!

Check that all HDMI and audio cables are securely connected. Just push the wires in and ensure they can’t be easily pulled out.

Confirm that the sound on any external devices is switched on. This includes checking any TV boxes, gaming consoles and speakers.

If there’s sound coming from your TV, or external speaker, but it’s out of sync or delayed then you need to go into your ‘Sound Settings’. Within the settings, you should find a ‘Lip Sync’ or ‘Audio Delay’ feature. By choosing this and then restarting your TV, the problem should be solved.

I’m having trouble with the remote

If the remote control isn’t working, then the first step is to make sure that all the batteries have been changed and are not loose. Secondly, ensure that there is nothing in between the TV and remote that could be causing an obstruction.

Next, try pointing it at all areas of the TV – you may just be missing the mark by an inch or two so just double check you’re aiming it at the right place. If you’ve dropped the remote or have spilled something on it, the buttons may be stuck. If this is the case, we recommend taking out all the batteries and gently cleaning in and around all buttons with a cotton bud and a very small amount of rubbing alcohol to loosen them up.
