What Is QD-OLED – Is It Better than OLED and QLED?

QLED, OLED, QNED, it feels like the TV industry has gone a bit Qrazy. There is so much terminology being flown around that it’s often hard to keep up with! AND THEN, we see the term QD-OLED adorning the shelves. So it won’t be long before buying a TV requires its own terminology dictionary and a degree in technology!

So, as a specialist in discount TVs, we want to help you out. We thought we should explain exactly what a QD-OLED TV is and what is so special about it.

What Is a QD-OLED TV?

A QD-OLED TV combines the technology of QLED and OLED. So, if you aren’t too sure about the differences, we will do a quick recap.

QLED TVs

QLED are the next step up from an LED TV. Liquid crystal pixels will display various shades and colours by controlling the amount of light passing through with the backlight, which creates the image on the screen. QLED TVs add an extra layer between the backlight and the display panel of quantum dots. When the backlight illuminates them, they will emit specific colours of light, adding an extra layer of depth to the picture you see on the TV.

OLED TV

Unlike QLED and LED TVs, OLED TVs use an array of organic light-emitting diodes, which work alone instead of with a backlight. This technology allows each pixel to offer its own supply of light and colour, making it much more detailed and reducing glare from the backlight. This glare reduction helps offer truer blacks and more depth to shades than other display technology types.

QD-OLED TVS

Bringing the technology from OLED and QLED TVs, the QD-OLED TV provides the best of both worlds. The TV offers an OLED backlight, allowing more flexibility within the light which passes through the liquid crystal pixels to bring more depth. A layer of quantum dots is added between the OLED backlight and display panel to offer even more depth, definition and brightness to the picture onscreen.

What Are the Benefits of a QD-OLED TV?

This powerhouse technology offers many benefits and helps alleviate the issues faced by QLED and OLED TVs. We explore the main benefits below:

Improved colour accuracy. Although OLED offers an excellent selection of colours and shades, adding the quantum dot layer adds the ability to offer more detail in colour, which helps to provide more detail and depth to images. This helps make the image more lifelike and provides dimensions to colour, producing an almost 3D effect.

Increased brightness. By increasing the output of colour, the QD-OLED TV can offer much brighter screens than the OLED and QLED devices. This increase in brightness provides more flexibility in positioning the TV in a home. In addition, you don’t have to worry too much about the sun reflecting on the screen, allowing them to be used more successfully in outdoor environments.

A wider colour gamut. Accessing an extra layer of colour allows QD-OLED TVs to produce a wider range of colours available. This expansion of colours helps to create more realistic images throughout the content.

Lightweight and thinner designs. Although this technology is improving on various elements of OLED and QLED TVs, it is still holding onto the many virtues they offer. For example, their lightweight and thinner designs have still been kept from the OLED TVs even with the additional layer of quantum dots.

Is There Any Downside to Buying a QD-OLED TV?

Although these TVs are the latest technology, they are not exempt from coming with a few uncertainties. For example, OLEDs have been known to suffer burn-ins, much like we experienced with plasma TVs. This issue is caused by uneven wearing of individual pixels, which can cause pictures to remain fixed on the screen even with the device turned off. Although it can happen with LED TVs, it is much less likely due to the even distribution of the backlight. However, the backlight in a QD-OLED is made from individual lights and could come with the same issue.

Another worry, as with most new technologies, is the unknown durability of the device, considering the price tag attached. QD-OLED TVs are significantly more expensive than other display technology, and when investing in a TV of this amount, not knowing how long it could last could put many consumers off from jumping in straight away.

Are QD-OLED TVs available to buy?

So far, only two TV manufacturers have crossed the finish line with releasing their QD-OLED TVs. Sony and Samsung released their flagship devices in early 2022, with a PC Monitor introduced by Alienware. Whilst this technology appeals to many consumers, LG has focused on developing display technologies with the help of MicroLEDs within their range of QNED TVs.

So, if you like the sound of these QD-OLED TVs, they start at £1,599.99 from big-name retailers. However, although we cannot always promise our stock, we have recently seen some of these TVs come through our doors (and quickly sold back out of them again).
