The Best TV of 2014 (Part One) – Here Come the British

You know what December is? The month of Christmas specials – and closer to the time, we’ll be recommending which of them are must-watches and which are best avoided. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. With 11 months of the year almost over, we think it’s high time to assess the best TV shows of 2014 – so far anyway! Kicking off our mini-series, we’ll take a gander at three of the top British programmes to hit our screens this year. And we’ll start with…

Inside Number 9

From two of the twisted minds of The League of Gentlemen came Inside Number 9. An anthology of stories, with each episode focussing on unconnected characters and stories, it looked to the worst and weirdest of humanity. We don’t want to spoil any of the episodes, but if you missed it and fancy seeing the darker side of life, this is definitely one to check out.

The Driver

The Driver just seemed to come out of nowhere, hit us hard with a mix of drama and crime – those two always seem to go together – and left us after three incredible episodes. Starring the wickedly talented David Morrisey, alongside Harry Potter’s Ian Hart and Colm Meaney, it tells the tale of a man who agrees to be a driver for a bunch of Manchester criminals. There’s tons of action, but the real heart comes from Morrisey’s everyman, Vince McKee, a good guy in a bad sitch.

Happy Valley

Sarah Lancashire used to be known as Coronation Street’s bimbo barmaid Raquel. Now she’s showing her acting chops as Yorkshire police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley. After losing her daughter, . But then she stumbles across the man she holds responsible for her daughter’s death, unaware he’s also now involved in a kidnap plot. It’s a brilliantly written drama with, a fantastic, powerful, yet flawed female at the centre.
