New Tech: What is QD-OLED?

LED TVs have technically been out since 1977, but the first leap in LED popularity in a domestic TV display was around the early 2000s. Over the years, we have seen an introduction of variations, including OLED, QLED and 3D technology.

As with most technology, companies are always trying to improve on and develop better quality, higher definition and even more immersive experiences with domestic TVs. The latest development planned to reach the market this year was the QD-OLED technology. As a retailer of discount TVs, we couldn’t help but get excited over the announcement of this new hybrid technology.

What are OLED and QLED?

With 2021 bringing about so many rumours of this new development for LED, most people have been waiting in anticipation to purchase the latest technology and understand how it has improved on the already impressive OLED and QLED devices. However, In order to explain the QD-OLED hybrid, first, we must understand the function of the QLED and OLED displays already well established in the manufacturing of TVs currently.

QLED – To offer a higher definition of colours and details, on a simplistic level,  there is a microscopic layer of quantum dots either as tubes or in a film between a blue LED backlight and the colour liquid crystal display filter to broaden the colour range, making the picture brighter and more defined. These dots can both absorb and emit light, making them ideal for lighter rooms such as brightly lit living rooms without losing colour density. They offer more image quality stability for more extended periods, providing an excellent life span compared to the OLED Display.

OLED – Standing for Organic Light Emitting Diode, these displays use the technology of producing light from each pixel instead of using a backing light, a feature of LED and QLED displays. Having each pixel emitting its own light provides more definition to shades such as black and offers an extra level of detail, and can be viewed on a broader spectrum, giving you consistent quality from a variety of angles. Unfortunately, whilst constantly improving, this technology struggles to provide the brightness of a QLED display and is sensitive to higher brightness levels with potential for burn-in and image retention.

How is QD-OLED combined?

Using the technology of emitting light from individual pixels whilst adding the extra layer of quantum dots brings the best technology of both displays into one. This combination will provide the impressive colour spectrum and scape of the QLED display whilst proving the intricate detail that can be found amongst the OLED displays in a fully immersive and remarkable experience. This will provide one of the most incredible displays on the market.

How does QD-OLED work?

According to Samsung, one of the TV brands introducing this technology, a QD-OLED display is made with three components. A TFT layer that includes an electronic circuit to pass current through the OLED material, a layer of blue OLED material that generates blue light, and a layer of quantum dots.

The QD-OLED panels have self-emissive pixels, so individual pixels can be dimmed to get perfect black levels. The QD-OLED panels offer deep blacks and high brightness to provide a significantly better HDR performance than traditional OLEDs. Samsung has made additional enhancements to enable the display to better combat glare and reduce exposure to harmful blue light wavelengths.

Who is selling the new QD-OLED TV?

Being brand new on the scene, only a few companies have released these new technologies, with Samsung and Sony being the only ones announcing the product’s release. You can buy direct from Samsung, but the Sony A95K (which features the QD-OLED display) is only available for pre-order. However, this technology can also be found in display monitors designed for the ultimate gaming experience manufactured by Alienware. Of course, as you can imagine, these devices also come with an incredible price tag, although not as much as expected for this top of the range development.

Samsung 2022 55″ S95B – £2,399.00

Sony 2022 55” A95K  (Pre-order price) – £2699.00
