The television is the centrepiece of most homes – it’s where families, couples and friends alike come together at the end of the day to chill out and relax. Therefore, the best living rooms offer plenty of seating with equally good views of the television. This blog will help you to style your room for a great night in.

Hints & Tips for All Abodes

Although our televisions might be getting thinner, the television experience is getting bigger and bigger. The entertainment enthusiasts of today aren’t afraid to splash out on surround sounds, ambient-lighting, gaming consoles and streaming boxes but, with so much stuff, comes a lot of responsibility; namely, where are you going to keep it all.

Don’t worry, because there are plenty of tips that can help you keep all your television gadgets without sacrificing the feng shui of your abode.

We’ll start with where your TV is going to be placed in your large and spacious room, and then we’ll shape your room around it. There are certain factors that you need to consider before you decide where to set the TV and its table – one of those factors is dependent on where you can plug it in without trailing cables across the floorboards, but another is the direction of your windows and where the sunlight will be coming through.

Where Are Your Sockets?

Plugging your television in a corner by your mains sockets is certainly the easiest method, but if you’re playing with a large open space, then you might want to extend your budget to call in an electrician to install some more electrical sockets in the floor. This can be a job and a half, because embedding sockets into your floor could require you to lift the floorboards, and then the engineer will also have to ensure the fittings are flush with the floorboard to ensure that they don’t become a trip hazard in the future.

This is all well and good if you are renovating your room thoroughly, but if you simply want to move your furniture about and try out a new style – ripping up the floorboards is going to be the first item on your agenda, although it might be something you would consider in the future for a more centralised television.

The Effects of Sunlight

Whether you’re installing new electrical fittings for your television or not, you will still need to consider the effect of the sun on your recently purchased cheap TV. It is recommended that you keep your televisions out of direct sunlight where possible, as the light could affect the productivity of the pixels on the screen over an extended period. If you or a member of your family engages in daytime television, you will want to be sure that your television screen is not in direct sunlight as this will make it harder to see the image.

Conversely, if you feel that your options are limited and you have no choice but to install your television in an area of your home that is regularly brightly lit by sunlight, then you might want to consider investing in some blackout curtains or blinds which you can leave drawn during the day.

Installing a Recessed Television

An alternative and more elegant solution to blackout blinds would be to install a recessed television. This will require some work on the wall into which you are going to put the television, a TV bracket, and – assuming you use television boxes, soundbars, or gaming consoles – a recessed cabinet to contain your entertainment.

One benefit of a recessed television is that they take up less space and are flush with the wall, giving your home a cleaner, more geometric aesthetic. They also hide all the messy wiring that you don’t need or want to see, but the sleek nature of this style does come with a big issue: they are difficult to get into if you want to hook in a new product or change a wire.

You might be able to get around this issue by installing a swing bracket that will allow you to literally swing the television out of its recess, but this will need you to ensure that none of your cables are taut when plugged in because they could come out when you move the television.

Can I Install a Fireplace Beneath My TV?

If you plan to recess your television, then you can certainly install a fireplace beneath your television. This trend is currently in vogue and is likely to stay that way since it means that you’ll be pointing your furniture towards both the television and the main heat source – ensuring that you’ll never have to play musical chairs between the TV and the fireplace again.

If you’re intending to manage this, you’ll need to speak to both fireplace installers and engineers quite early in your planning process to ensure that you are legally correct and safe to proceed with your plans.

Where Should I Keep My Surround Sound?

Although a surround sound system can improve viewing experiences tenfold, they’re rarely very aesthetically pleasing. Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy solution to this problem, and most rooms tend to hide the surround sound in the corner behind sofas and potted plants. If you have trouble with wires in a traditionally styled home, then you could pull back the chair rails and hide your wires behind a new set.

If your home is in a modern style, however, your best bet will be to run any rogue wires below rugs, carpeting, or through the walls.

How Important is Ambient Lighting on my Television?

Ambient lighting won’t make or break your room, but it’s certainly a nice addition to your standard television. Televisions with ambient lighting are at their best when sat in a dimly lit room. They work by throwing out light that matches the colour of the scene on the walls behind the television, thereby raising the emotion of the scene and giving your walls purpose in contributing to your experience.

Other Stylish Televisions

Sometimes it isn’t just where you put the television, it’s the television itself. We’ve seen some brilliant television designs released in the last five years, but perhaps none quite so impressive as the LG rollable television which is completely at home in a minimalist aesthetic. Alternatively, you might consider The Frame, which is one of Samsung’s many television styles designed to blend into any room – they even sport the latest QLED technology.

How would you design this open space around your television?
