The Release of the Sony 16k TV

The rate at which new advancements are being made in TV technology is incredible. We have come a long way since HD TV became available to consumers back in 1998, with 4K, 3D and OLED TVs now dominating the TV market thanks to their crystal-clear screen quality.

The very latest in TV technology was unveiled by electronic manufacturing powerhouse Sony earlier this year, with the first 16K TV.

In this article, we will take a closer look at this incredible feat of engineering whilst also highlighting some of the potential uses of this technology in years to come.

16K: The Latest in TV Technology

Standing at 63ft by 17ft, Sony’s 16K screen is being installed at a new research centre in Yokohama. To give the screen size some context, it’s longer than a London bus and covers the first and second floor at the facility it is installed in. To truly show off this impressive feat of TV engineering, Sony had to produce its own image to be used on the screen as there is so little 16K content which currently exists.

The display’s clarity is second to none, as it boasts four times as many horizontal pixels as a 4K TV, and eight times more than a regular 1080p HD TV. Altogether, the screen has 16 times as many pixels as a 4K UHD TV. The quality of resolution is so high, that viewers can stand close to the unit without the image looking blurred. Many experts have dubbed the 16K screen as “Crystal LED”.

Sony has described the giant 16K display as acting like a “window to the world”, which in years to come, it definitely will be. As stated before, the main issue with this technology is that at present, there simply isn’t any content. As 8K content is only just beginning to emerge, we can only assume that we are a significant way off being able to enjoy our favourite movies in crisp 16K resolution. However, we can’t contain our excitement for this content eventually hitting 16K screens, it will be a genuinely astounding breakthrough in TV technology.

Potential Uses of 16K Screens

Whilst it’s fair to say that we can’t expect to see 16K technology in our homes for a fair few decades, there are some potential uses we can expect to see over the next few years:

  • Sports Stadiums – More and more sports stadiums around the world are incorporating large screens into their playing areas for fans. These screens are usually compiled of many smaller screens which pair up to make one huge image. In the future, we could potentially see 16K screens used to replay some of the key moments from huge sporting events.
  • Cinemas – There is a good chance that cinemas could incorporate 16K technology over the next few years. Whilst there is still little-to-no 16K content available at present, this will inevitably change over the coming years as more advancements are made in technology. 16K technology being available in cinemas would mean you don’t need to worry if the cinema is almost sold out, and you’re forced to watch from the front row!
  • Advertising Billboards – In cities around the world, you are sure to find huge advertising boards scattered around the busiest areas which show crystal clear adverts from some of the biggest companies in the world. It is very likely that global companies will be keen to start creating 16K adverts which could be used on huge advertising billboards throughout the world’s largest cities. With advertisers keen to get their message across as clearly as possible, 16K could well be the perfect technology for them to do so.
