Sky Glass Vs Smart TV

Sky Television has been around since the early 90s and has been a popular subscription in many households. In the days before Freeview and the multiple channels that the standard satellite now offers, Sky was one of the first services to provide more options with its original nine additional channels.

The package was appealing as it opened availability to American TV shows, which before hadn’t quite been as accessible. It multiplied to offer hundreds of additional channels in many categories, from music to films. However, accessing the subscription required a separate satellite dish and a console which would sit under the TV, which was a lot of hassle. In addition, it often came with installation costs and package prices that were unachievable for lower-income households, especially if you wished to have it in several rooms in the house. As the years have progressed, Sky has been developing its technology to reduce the need for installation and additional equipment, which we first saw with the introduction of the Sky Q box. This more compact box ran off the internet for faster use but, unfortunately, still required a satellite connection and multiple untidy wires.

What is Sky Glass TV?

Sky launched a new product in October 2021, which eliminated the additional box and satellite, the new Sky Glass TV. This new TV can access all the hundreds of channels through the internet alone, with no other equipment required. With no installation required, it cuts the costs and, with no extra wires, can be wall-mounted with ease, but with most channels being available on streaming services such as NowTV, how does it compare to the purchase of other cheap smart TVs?

Picture and Display

The Sky Glass TV offers Quantum Dot technology, popular amongst many other affordable branded smart TVs, such as cheap Samsung TVs and their Neo QLED range. This technology provides an excellent quality picture, with a high definition of colours and is ideal in brightly lit rooms, which many living rooms are. In addition, they provide a much longer lifespan than other display technologies, providing you with the best value for money. However, if you are an avid film buff, an OLED TV can offer a better depth of colour and definition than a QLED, and if you are looking for the perfect device for a movie room, then OLED would be a preferable option.

In addition to screen technology limitations, you are also restricted to the size of your TV. The Sky Glass offers three sizes, 43”, 55” and 65”. Whilst these sizes are reasonably useful for most family rooms; if you are looking for smaller or a size in between, cheap LED TVs offer you more variety.

Sound Quality

While many TVs offer fantastic sound, Sky Glass uses Dolby Atmos technology, one of the best audio technologies available for broadcasting. The Sky Glass features six acoustically engineered speakers which can project sound upwards and propel it around the room for that ultimate surround sound experience without additional components. If you compare this to a smart Sony Bravia 4K OLED 55” TV, this only offers three speakers with Dolby Atmos, which will still provide you with a great sound, but not entirely on the scale of a Sky Glass TV. In addition, with a built-in subwoofer, you will hear the sound and feel the crashes and crowd cheers from your favourite sports matches and movies, almost like you are on the screen yourself.

Unfortunately, whilst the ability to provide excellent sound is built into the Sky Glass TV, unless you have the correct content formatted to Dolby Atmos, you won’t quite experience the optimum audio the TV offers.

TV Packages

As mentioned previously, Sky allows you access to hundreds of channels at the touch of a button, from Nickelodeon to the National Geographic shows. These channels were once only available through a sky subscription, which came with a significant price. However, with the right deal, Sky can offer you these at reduced prices for your contract period. Like phone contracts, Sky provides a minimum of 18 months for its packages, and to experience all the channels available, and you would need to purchase all of their packages, which could cost up to £100 a month. Whilst Sky offers a little flexibility with their packages, you will still be tied into an 18-month contract, and cancellation comes at a cost to both your wallet and time. In addition, the Sky Glass TV does not come as part of the package and is an additional monthly payment, which would be like buying a TV on credit.

In comparison, we offer a vast range of discount TVs with prices so low you can afford to purchase the TV at the same price you would pay Sky for a complete TV package in a few months. In addition, with online streaming services available through a smart TV, you can opt-in and out of subscription services on a month-by-month basis from online streaming platforms like Disney+ and Netflix. Although Sky does obtain exclusivity to many of its channels, most of its entertainment, movies and children’s programs can be accessed through the online streaming service NowTV. Working much like any other online streaming service, you pay monthly and can cancel at any time. This is ideal when household finances fluctuate and one month paying for your TV package may not be feasible.

Whilst the Sky Glass is an impressive development in TV technology unless you are a loyal Sky customer who requires the need for Sky TV, there is no reason why a smart TV can’t offer you the same quality and even better functions. Our cheap TVs can be a more cost-effective solution with features such as smart home assistants and accessibility to online streaming platforms.
