How To Choose The Best Spot For Your TV

Nowadays, we spend a lot of time sat in front of our TVs, so making sure you get the best possible viewing experience should be one of the main considerations when purchasing a new television. But finding a balance between your viewing experience and your room layout can be a challenge. So, here’s our guide to finding the best place to put your TV.

How Close Will You Be Sat To The TV?

The distance you sit from your TV can often depend on what you mostly use it for. If the majority of time is spent watching sport with friends, you’ll probably be sat at a good distance from the TV. However, if it’s main use is for gaming, you’re likely to be sat a little closer. For general everyday use, our guide on finding the right size TV for your room will help.

When it comes to viewing distance, you may also be limited by the size of the room. Generally speaking, for TVs between 45” and 55”, a distance somewhere between two and three meters is about right. For larger TVs, you’ll need to be sat over three meters away to get the best viewing experience.

Where Will You Plug The TV In?

Most rooms have more than one main power socket, but you’ll need to make sure there are enough outlets for any other items, like a set-top box, DVD player or games console. And you’ll need to consider the age-old issue of cable management. If your TV is a few feet from the power supply, the cables can look messy, especially if you have a few things plugged in. So it’s usually best to position your TV as close to the power sockets as possible.

Position Yout TV At The Right Height

Most experts recommend positioning your TV with the centre of the screen at, or just above, eye level. If your TV is on a stand, it will likely be at a height that’s comfortable to watch. If you’re mounting it on a wall, the best way to figure out a comfortable viewing height for your room is to stick a piece of paper on the wall where your TV is mounted (ideally with something like Blu-Tac so you don’t mark the wall). This will represent the centre of your TV. You can then sit where you normally watch TV and move the paper up or down until it feels comfortable.

Should You Mount Your TV Above The Fireplace?

Mounting a TV above a fireplace has become relatively common in recent years, but should you do it?

While it might look great and be in keeping with your room’s décor, it can mean that the TV ends up being much higher than is comfortable to watch, depending on the height of the fireplace. If you have a large room, this may not be as much of an issue because you’ll be sat further away from the screen. If you have a smaller room, however, you may want to have a re-think. Sitting through a two-hour movie while straining your neck looking upwards doesn’t make for the most enjoyable experience.

Consider The Lighting In Your Room

Lighting issues are easily avoided, but many people overlook this when positioning their TVs. And it’s something you should pay particular attention to if you’re planning on wall-mounting your TV because it’s much more difficult to simply move your TV if you get it wrong. The main thing you want to avoid is bright reflections or direct sunlight on your screen. So, if the sun hits a particular wall in the evening, that’s probably not the best place to put your TV; otherwise, you’ll be forever adjusting the curtains. Likewise, if you sit with your back to a window, facing the TV, you’ll have to deal with the constant glare from the reflection of the window.

If you plan on wall-mounting your TV and think the lighting might be an issue, it’s worth investing in a wall mount that pivots. That way, you can easily eliminate any annoying reflections.

Think About The Viewing Angles

The importance of viewing angles depends on a few things; firstly, where will you usually be sat when you’re watching TV? If you’re always directly facing the TV, because you’ll mostly be gaming, for example, viewing angles aren’t too much of a concern. If the TV is viewed from several places around the room, however, you’ll certainly want to make sure your TV has wide viewing angles. This will ensure that the picture is clear, bright, and retains its colour, no matter where you watch from.
