How Many TVs Should You Have?

Today, we’re considering how many TVs the British public assumes to be ‘too many’. In this blog, you’ll find stats such as how many television sets are used by the UK, the most popular rooms for the television, and how many is too many.

How Many TVs in the United Kingdom

In 2018, Statista recorded that over 27 million households in the UK had a television set, with over 40% of those televisions being a smart TV. With statistics like that, you might think that UK was a country addicted to television, but actually, we are fairly average when our viewing time is compared to the rest of Europe.

On average, a UK adult will spend around four hours watching television. This figure is largely carried by older members of the population who spend longer watching television in their retirement. Interestingly, it is thought that adults on average are watching half an hour less every day than they were in 2010 (Statista).

How Many TVs in British Homes

The Telegraph reported in 2010 that two-thirds of British households had at least three televisions, and that one in six families have five, and there are plenty of good reasons for this. Let’s take a look at how different viewing habits have inspired homes to acquire an increasing quantity of TVs.

  • Communal Watching

This is the television that lives in your living room. This is the TV that brings the family together for light evening entertainment, quiz shows, the news, and even family workouts! For young families, this will also probably be the main TV used by your young ones if you want to police their viewing habits.

  • Older Content and Parents

Young families will often purchase a television for the parent’s bedroom. This enables the parents to keep watching the post-watershed TV shows without worrying about the effects that their more mature viewing habits could have on young minds.

  • Teenage Responsibility

For many families and children, being allowed to have their own television in their room comes with a lot of pride. Allowing your teenager to have a cheap smart TV of their own tells them that you trust them to develop their own viewing tastes responsibly.

  • Video and DVDs Only

Some families gift their youngest children with a television that has no service or connection to popular apps and channels. Instead, the child is reliant on videos and DVDs gifted to them by their family, which is an easy way to control their viewing habits whilst also allowing them some privacy and quiet time.

Many children still enjoy the quirkiness of owning one of our cheap 3D TVs.

  • Kitchen TV

Perhaps surprisingly for some, the kitchen is another popular place for a television in the British home. With the advent of flat screens, this became even more prevalent as the common household TV no longer uses the same amount of space. A small, flat-screen TV can now be placed in a kitchen without using valuable counter space.

Why Is Television So Popular?

Televisions connect us to society through news and entertainment. Often, people use what they have learnt from their televisions to create strong bonds with their peers over their favourite shows. As such, it can be hard to be in casual conversations without having access to a television at home.

Lately, televisions have become quite affordable. New technology always declines in price over time, especially with items of high popularity. This is because new, better models are introduced which leads to the depreciation of older versions. This is great news for the thrifty buyer, as it means that patience can supply the individual with great savings.

There is, however, an alternative to waiting to buy your new television: graded stock. Graded stock features items that can’t be sold through the usual means. One reason for this might be that they have been already used for display on a shop floor. Smart shoppers know that this is the secret to securing some of the latest tech at great prices.
