CES 2017 Spotlight: LG Signature OLED TV “W”

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is something that we look forward to every January. With over 3,800 exhibitors which contain some of the biggest names in technology to date, there’s always going to be something that is presented to the world that’s going to wow us.

This year was especially poignant as the event was celebrating 50 years of bringing technological advances to the world – what a fitting place for some of these manufacturers to announce the future of their brand and the way that we interact with technology!

One product that really caught our eye was LG’s new addition to their OLED collection, simply called “W”.

What Is W?

LG were on top form at CES this year, but no one expected their announcement of an extremely thin TV. Using OLED technology, the super high-definition unit measures a tiny 3.85mm thick and boasts a massive 65-inch screen – which is as thin as a slice of bread!

Rather than using the curved style that many new TVs are opting for, the flat-screened TV uses the standard flat design that TVs are traditionally known for.

LG’s USA marketing vice president David VanderWaal answered one very important question during the presentation of the new TV – why is it called W?

“Wallpaper. Window. Wow,” was his answer.

Impressive Features

The W model isn’t able to stand by itself on legs, but is can be mounted on a wall where it will protrude minimally into the room, making it a great choice for those people who don’t want a TV taking up valuable space within a room.

Even the wall mounting of this TV is impressive. Due to the thin nature of the TV –  it only weighs around 8 pounds – there’s no need for a bulky or unsightly brackets to hold the unit in place on the wall. Instead, LG have included a wall mounting plate which needs to be screwed into the wall at the top, but which holds the TV in place at the bottom using magnets.

There’s always the rumour that going thinner with technology can impede on image quality, but LG have guaranteed that, just because the W is going to be thinner than many OLED TV units, it is not going to impact the quality at all, and that the 4k picture will be as clear – if not clearer – than many of the OLEDs which are announced this year.

The TV is so thin that it requires a sound bar to be connected to hear the sound, but there is access on the back of this speaker bar which allows HDMI input and other standard inputs. This also handles Dolby Atmos, which is one of Dolby’s surround sound technologies which aims to give viewers a fully immersive experience.

We’re always looking to the future here at Electronic World, and we can’t wait to see how successful this “wallpaper thin” TV does with consumers when it launches – especially with the price tag of roughly £6,580!
