8K TVs have caused quite a stir in the world of technology since being released in September and there is no doubt that they are set to improve the viewing experience for those lucky enough to own one at this early stage. But what exactly is the advantage of owning an 8K TV, and how do they compare to 4K TVs? Fear not, we have the answers you seek, so get ready to be enlightened with the main difference between 4K and 8K TVs.

What is a 4K TV?

As one of the latest forms of televisions currently on the market, the 4K TV runs under a few different pseudonyms such as Ultra HD, UHD, and 4K Ultra HD. 4K TVs were created in order to improve viewing experiences, which is why it has more pixels per inch than any previous models. To best understand the 4K TV, we should compare it to its predecessors.

Understanding Display Resolution Differences

If you use YouTube, and chances are that you do, you may have seen the option to change the display resolutions on your videos from 144p all the way up to 1080p. You can test this now by going on to YouTube and clicking on the cog at the bottom right of some videos, then changing the display resolutions. If you do this, you will notice that the lower the display resolution, the blurrier the image becomes. The standard definition TV had 405, 504 pixels in total. This is 704 x 576 pixels. The display resolution for this TV was 480p, and it couldn’t go above that limit.

After the standard definition TV came the Full HD TV, which had 2,093,600 pixels – four times as many as the standard definition TV. The Full HD TV could achieve display resolutions up to 720p, but no higher.

After the Full HD TV came the 4K TV. The 4K TV has four times as many pixels as the Full HD TV and sixteen times as many pixels as the standard definition. In total, 4K has over 8,000,000 pixels spread at a rate of 3840 x 2160. 4K TV allows you to view content in 1080p. Content made in 4K, also referred to as 1080p, includes some YouTube content, certain blu-rays and various TV channels on BT and Sky.

The 8K TV

Most YouTube display resolutions max out at 1080p, but with the dawn of 8K TVs, there are a few videos knocking around this site filmed in 4320p – 8K. The 8K TV follows suit with its predecessors by quadrupling the number of pixels offered by 4K TVs. An 8K TV has a whopping 33,000,000 pixels compared to the 8,000,000 that 4K TV possesses.

4K TVs are extremely popular, and many of us struggle to imagine viewing a TV that achieves greater images than the stunning crisp images a 4K TV produces. However, it is possible to see the difference between 8K and 4K TVs. The best viewing angle for a 4K TV is for it to take up roughly one-third of your horizontal field of view; any more than this and you will be able to see the individual pixels which can spoil the viewing experience. 8K can fill over half of your horizontal field of view without making the pixels visible. Having an 8K TV in your home takes you one step closer to possessing a truly awesome home cinema.

Technical Challenges in Supporting 4K and 8K

Sometimes, whilst watching YouTube videos, you may notice your video is constantly changing quality. This could be because your bandwidth has momentarily dropped, and your internet no longer has the capacity to carry the amount of information needed for higher resolutions. This presents a problem for 4K/1080p and 8K/4320p videos, which require a massive amount of data to be transmitted. As a result, there is less content transmitted in 4K, and even less in 8K, because it is more expensive. In the future, however, bandwidth will increase and these resolutions will be more accessible. Asia, for example, is hoping to have 8K content available before the 2020 Olympics.
