2017 Golden Globes: The Biggest Winners and the Biggest Losers

The 74th annual Golden Globes held this Sunday 8th January was a fierce competition of talent. Strongly highlighting potential Oscars winners, the ceremony had some surprising wins and losses this year.

Biggest Winner: La La Land (2016)

Setting a new Golden Globe record of seven victories, La La Land took home the awards for Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Actor (Ryan Gosling), Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Original Song (“City of Stars”), Best Screenplay, Best Score (Justin Hurwitz), and Best Director (Damien Chazelle).

This romantic musical comedy film combines with a touch of drama to tell the tale of the romance between Sebastian, a jazz pianist, and Mia, an aspiring actress. Since the world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the film was very well received by critics and audiences around the world.

Biggest Loser: Moonlight (2016)

Winner of Best Motion Picture (Drama), Moonlight was expected to win in two other categories it got nominated for: Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali and Best Screenplay. The loss might impact its Oscars chances as the Golden Globes are known for predicting winners in Oscars’ acting categories.

A timeless drama documenting the life of Juan, a young black man living in a rough Miami neighbourhood, Moonlight tells the story of Juan’s life from childhood to adulthood. Emotional and impactful, the film was chosen by the American Film Institute as one of 2016’s top films.

Big Win for Streaming Television

A first time win for a streaming series, The Crown won the award for Best Television Drama. The Netflix TV show also took home the award for Best Actress, Television Drama (Claire Foy), beating TV shows such as Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, Westworld, and This is Us.

Representing the early years of Queen Elizabeth II on the throne, the TV show encompasses the Queen’s life from a 25-year-old newlywed in 1947 until the present day.

Big Loss for HBO

Critically acclaimed for its stunning visuals and scriptwriting, Game of Thrones has won an outstanding number of awards throughout its seasons. Expected to win at the Golden Globes, HBO was faced with a loss it hasn’t seen in 10 years: no Golden Globes awards.

The recent Westworld TV show was also considered to be a strong awards contender, but this year the competitive nature of the stunning TV productions was clear to see, with many deserving TV shows nominated.
